For the rather soberly inclined Brahms from Hamburg, the waltz was perhaps the most important import he absorbed during his stays in Vienna. In addition to the purely instrumental pieces for piano, his "Liebeslieder-Walzer" stand for folk-like as well as original unique pieces of songful bliss in three-four time. Lyrics, as if taken from life, tell of love, longing, lust, suffering, but also anger and mockery.
How ideally this music fits into the workshop atmosphere of the Marlboro Festival summer is audible here. Joyful, inspired and yet relaxed, the artistic team around Rudolf Serkin sings and plays the finest Brahms, illuminating the corners of earthly existence. Schubert's penultimate composition "The Shepherd on the Rock" (D 965) proves to be an excellent choice in the canon of emotions. The great and much too rarely performed vocal scene is based on three poems, which soloist Benita Valente interprets musically brilliantly and atmospherically. Not least the added clarinet part, in its soloistic as well as vocal imitation, gives the piece its special charm.A Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52 (I-XII)
