From the beginning, Widespread Panic developed a unique sound that was unmistakably theirs. It was a blend of Michael Houser's unconventional guitar playing, John Bell's rough vocals, Todd Nance's steady drumming, David Schools' bass guitar expertise and Sunny Ortiz's diverse percussion skills. The band was committed to playing their original songs right from the start and were always ready to improvise on stage. In September 1988, Landslide Records released Space Wrangler, the band's debut album, which was produced by John Keane. Colonel Bruce Hampton, a local shaman, bandleader, and early mentor, personally delivered the first copies of the album to the band.
