Continuing where Murray Street's experimentalism ended, Sonic Youth's Sonic Nurse demonstrates the band's ongoing revitalization and possibly even a more fruitful creative streak than seen on their previous album. Longtime Sonic Youth fans know what to expect, but the band still has the power to surprise. One of the biggest surprises on Sonic Nurse is the return of Kim Gordon, whose presence was limited on the previous two albums. Her four contributions, including the strong rock song "Pattern Recognition," make a significant impact. Her quieter tracks, like "Dude Ranch Nurse" and "I Love You Golden Blue," are equally impressive with their alluring yet nihilistic lyrics. The other band members also have their moments to shine, such as Thurston Moore's epic "Dripping Dream" and Lee Ranaldo's noise-meets-melody track "Paper Cup Exit."
